About this tour

Pantabangan Reservoir was created in 1974 when the Pantabangan Dam was completed on the Pampanga River, flooding the original valley town and creating an 8,000-hectare lake surrounded by the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains. It is the Philippines' largest man-made reservoir and its most unusual camping destination — a vast inland sea in the middle of rice-farming Nueva Ecija, with an eerie and poignant history visible literally beneath the water surface.

The boat tour across the lake is the experience most people remember. During the dry season months of March through May, when the reservoir's water level drops by several metres, the ruins of Old Pantabangan emerge from the water: the stone bell tower of the original church, the concrete walls of the barangay hall, the crosses of the old cemetery. Seven communities were relocated when the dam was built; their foundations remain perfectly preserved beneath the lake in the cold, still water. The sight of a colonial church steeple breaking the lake surface with mountains behind it is one of the most otherworldly images in the Philippines.

The camping component focuses on the lake's natural pleasures. The fishing is excellent — tilapia, bighead carp, and snakehead fish populate the reservoir in significant numbers, and the catch-and-cook dinner over a campfire on the lakeside is a satisfying end to a day on the water. Kayaking across the early morning lake, with mist rising from the surface and the Sierra Madre mountains turning pink in the dawn, is the kind of quiet experience that feels genuinely restorative. The return journey on day 2 includes a boat circuit of the more submerged ruins and a stop at the dam overlook before returning to Cabanatuan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the submerged town of Pantabangan?
When the Pantabangan Dam was completed in 1974, the reservoir flooded the original town of Pantabangan and seven surrounding barrios. During the dry season (March-May) when water levels drop, the tops of the church, buildings, and cemetery crosses emerge from the water — a haunting and photogenic sight.
Is the fishing catch-and-keep?
Yes — tilapia caught in the lake can be taken and cooked on the campfire for dinner. The lake is managed by the NIA (National Irrigation Administration) and recreational fishing is permitted.
