About this tour

Mount Pulag stands 2,922 meters above sea level, the third highest peak in the Philippines and the highest in Luzon, rising above the Benguet-Ifugao-Nueva Vizcaya border in the heart of the Cordillera. Its upper slopes are blanketed in mossy montane forest and a unique dwarf bamboo grassland that is endemic to this mountain — a landscape unlike anything else in the tropics. On clear mornings, the summit emerges above a sea of clouds while the surrounding peaks of the Cordillera range glow in the first light. It is, by near-universal trekker consensus, the best sunrise in the Philippines.

Day 1 involves the drive from Baguio to the DENR Ranger Station at Ambangeg (the standard Pulag trailhead), permit processing, a safety briefing, and the afternoon hike through mossy forest to the summit camp at approximately 2,600 meters. Camp is established at a flat grassland area with views in every direction; evening temperature drops to 5-8°C, and the guide prepares hot soup over a camp stove while stars appear above the cloud layer below.

Day 2 begins at 3:00 AM with the summit push — a 2-hour climb through frost-tipped dwarf bamboo in the dark, arriving at the 2,922m summit as the eastern sky begins to lighten. The sunrise above the clouds, when it comes, reduces grown trekkers to tears with some regularity. Descent back to camp for breakfast, then the hike down to the trailhead, van back to Baguio, arriving mid-afternoon. Physical demand is significant but manageable for moderately fit hikers; no technical climbing skills required.
