About this tour

Whang-Od Oggay, born in 1927, is the last mambabatok (traditional tattoo artist) of the Butbut tribe of Kalinga — and one of the most remarkable living cultural figures in Southeast Asia. At over 95 years old, she still practices the ancient hand-tap tattooing technique using calamansi thorns, charcoal ink, and a bamboo stick, producing the geometric Kalinga warrior tattoos that were once marks of headhunting prowess. She now works alongside granddaughters and apprentices, and a visit to her home in Buscalan village is an extraordinary privilege.

The journey itself is part of the experience. The drive from Baguio climbs into the Cordillera Central, winding past rice terraces, pine forests, and remote Kalinga settlements before the road ends at a trailhead above Buscalan. The 45-minute trek down into the village on steep mountain paths arrives at a cluster of traditional houses overlooking a river valley — there are no hotels, no gift shops, only the village.

The cultural immersion includes time with the local community: watching the mambabatok process, trying homegrown Kalinga coffee, and staying overnight in a village homestay with a Butbut family. Morning in Buscalan, with fog lifting off the valley and roosters competing with birdsong, is an experience that resets your sense of what travel can be. Tattoo sessions are available on a first-come-first-served basis at the village; this tour does not guarantee a tattoo slot but dramatically increases your access through the local guide network.

Frequently asked questions

Is a tattoo guaranteed?
Not guaranteed — Whang-Od and her granddaughters work on a first-served basis and may have a queue. The guide communicates with the village in advance to maximize access.
What does a tattoo cost?
Prices vary by design: PHP 150-500 for small geometric patterns. Payment goes directly to the mambabatok family, not to this tour operator.
What are the sleeping conditions?
Basic but comfortable village homestay — sleeping mats or simple beds, communal bathroom. This is a genuine cultural experience, not glamping.
