About this tour

Bataan is a province that wears its history heavily — the WW2 chapter is the one most visitors know, but the peninsula's heritage stretches back centuries before 1942 to the Spanish colonial period when Bataan's narrow land corridor and Manila Bay position made it strategically vital to the colonial administration. This day tour balances both layers: the colonial architectural heritage of Balanga City and Morong with the natural heritage of the pawikan (sea turtle) nesting beaches on the eastern coast.

Balanga City, the provincial capital, retains several well-preserved Spanish colonial landmarks: the Balanga Cathedral (officially Basilica of the Immaculate Conception), built in the 18th century with the massive stone walls and bell tower characteristic of Philippine baroque churches. The Provincial Capitol building, constructed in the American colonial era, is a handsome structure surrounded by heritage trees and flanked by WW2 monuments. The guide contextualises the colonial urban planning that made Balanga a centre of commerce and governance for the entire Bataan peninsula.

The afternoon moves to the coastal side of the province. The Pawikan Conservation Center in Morong protects some of Central Luzon's most important sea turtle nesting beaches. The center monitors multiple species of pawikan — olive ridley, green, and hawksbill — that return to these beaches each year. During hatching season (October-February) it is possible to witness the release of hatchlings into the sea at night, one of wildlife tourism's most emotional experiences. Year-round, the center's staff explain the conservation biology of sea turtles and the threats they face from fishing nets, coastal development, and egg poaching. The beach itself is clean and largely uncrowded, making it a pleasant afternoon stop regardless of season.
