About this tour

Minalungao National Park is one of the Philippines' most underappreciated protected areas — a 2,812-hectare wilderness in General Tinio, Nueva Ecija, where the Penaranda River has spent millions of years carving a limestone canyon of extraordinary beauty. Most Filipinos have never heard of it. Those who discover it tend to rank it among the country's finest natural experiences, with good reason: the combination of dramatic karst scenery, accessible river adventure, and virtual absence of tourists creates an experience that feels like discovery rather than tourism.

The canyon is the park's centrepiece: vertical limestone walls rising 20-30 metres from the river surface, polished smooth by centuries of flooding, their faces decorated with ferns and mosses clinging to every crack. The river itself alternates between shallow wading sections — where the water barely covers your knees and the riverbed is multi-coloured limestone pebbles — and deep swimming holes of extraordinary clarity, where the water is green-blue and cold even in the dry season. The guide navigates the route depending on water levels, always finding the best combination of wading, swimming, and cliff-jumping opportunities.

The cliff jumps at Minalungao are the activity most people remember longest: platforms at 5 and 10 metres from which you launch into clear water below, the canyon walls close enough that the splash echoes off the limestone. The surrounding rainforest adds a natural soundtrack of hornbills and kingfishers, and the guide knows where to find the endemic species most visitors miss: the Luzon bleeding-heart pigeon feeds on the forest floor in the early morning, and Philippine long-tailed macaques often follow the trekking group at a respectful distance hoping for fallen fruit.
