About this tour

Miag-ao Church — formally the Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva — is one of four Baroque churches in the Philippines inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and arguably the most visually extraordinary of the group. Built between 1731 and 1797 from honey-coloured sandstone quarried from nearby hills, its fortress-like form was designed to serve as a refuge for townspeople during Moro raids from the sea.

But what elevates Miag-ao above mere defensive architecture is its extraordinary carved facade. The native Filipino stonecutters commissioned to carve the religious imagery quietly incorporated their own world into the work: the central tympanum shows St Christopher not crossing a European river but wading through a Philippine landscape of coconut palms, papayas, banana trees, and tropical flora. The child Jesus sits on his shoulder above a scene that would be entirely at home in Panay. This synthesis of Spanish iconography and indigenous vision makes Miag-ao's facade one of the most important pieces of colonial Philippine art anywhere.

The drive south from Iloilo City follows the coast of Panay Gulf through a string of heritage towns — Oton, known for its pina cloth weaving; Tigbauan, where the fish port receives dawn catches of fresh squid, tuna, and the prized Ilonggo shrimp paste called guinamos; and Guimbal, whose own 18th-century church has a massive bell tower topped with a lighthouse beacon that once guided fishing boats home. The return via the interior municipalities passes through the cane fields that defined Iloilo's sugar economy for two centuries.
