About this tour

The Magat Dam is one of those infrastructure projects whose scale defies comprehension until you stand at its base. The 145-metre earth-fill embankment stretches 600 metres across the Magat River gorge and backs up a reservoir of 4,540 hectares — the largest man-made lake in the Philippines — that transformed the agricultural economy of the Cagayan Valley when it was completed in 1982. The dam provides flood control, irrigation water for 85,000 hectares of ricefields, and 360 megawatts of hydroelectric power to northern Luzon.

The NIA (National Irrigation Administration) eco park on the eastern bank of the dam provides public access to the dam structure with guided infrastructure tours, a reservoir overlook, and trails through bamboo and reforestation zones. The reservoir boat tour gives the best perspective on the dam's scale: approaching the face from the water, with the spillway and power generation intakes rising vertically beside you, is genuinely awe-inspiring in the way that only large civil engineering projects can be.

The reservoir is increasingly important for migratory waterbirds using the East Asian-Australasian Flyway — the large, shallow margins attract thousands of ducks, herons, egrets, and wading birds during the October-March season. Local birding groups have recorded over 60 species on the reservoir in a single morning, including rarities blown in by typhoons from Japan and mainland China. The eco park's bamboo trails provide additional habitat for forest birds, and the resident Collared Kingfisher population is reliable year-round.

Frequently asked questions

What is Magat Dam?
The Magat Dam is a 145-metre earth-fill dam on the Magat River (a major tributary of the Cagayan River), completed in 1982. It generates 360 MW of electricity and irrigates 85,000 hectares of Cagayan Valley ricefields — the engine of northern Luzon's agricultural economy.
Is fishing allowed in Magat Reservoir?
The reservoir supports an active fishpen and fish cage industry managed by local communities. Recreational fishing is permitted in designated zones with a local permit — the guide can arrange this on request.
