Dumaguete Whale Watching & Spinner Dolphin Encounter
About this tour
The Tañon Strait between Negros and Cebu is one of the most important cetacean habitats in the Philippines — a deep, nutrient-rich channel declared a UNESCO marine protected area and home to over 14 species of whale and dolphin. Dumaguete sits at the southern entrance of the strait, making it one of the best departure points for responsible whale and dolphin watching in the country.
Tours depart the Dumaguete pier before sunrise and head north into the strait as the sky lightens. Spinner dolphins are by far the most consistent sighting: large pods of hundreds of animals frequently bow-ride the speedboats and put on acrobatic spinning displays at the surface. The strait also hosts resident populations of Fraser's dolphins and Risso's dolphins, and during the cooler months (November to May) sperm whales, false killer whales, and occasionally blue whales have been documented by the Tañon Strait research teams that share water with the tour boats.
The tour is guided by naturalists who work with the Oceana Philippines research network, so you're getting expert identification and genuine respect-for-wildlife positioning. No boats charge the animals; the dolphins approach of their own accord. After the cetacean session the return route often passes Apo Island's outer reef for a brief snorkel.
