Dumaguete Twin Lakes Trekking — Balinsasayaw & Danao Crater Lakes
About this tour
High in the mountains above Dumaguete, hidden inside a cloud-forested volcanic caldera, lie two of the Philippines' most serene and least-visited highland lakes. Balinsasayaw and Danao are twin crater lakes that sit within the Valencia Protected Landscape, their dark waters ringed by montane forest and dramatic ridge views across Negros Oriental to the sea.
The trekking route begins at 700 metres altitude in Valencia town and climbs through increasingly dense forest past giant ferns, mossy boulders, and streams that feed both lakes. The trail is genuinely wild — no guardrails, no gift shops, just forest and birdsong. The area is exceptional for endemic birdwatching: Negros bleeding-heart pigeons, Visayan hornbills, and the spectacular Rufous-lored kingfisher have all been recorded here, making it a bucket-list destination for Philippines birders.
At the lakes, the views repay every uphill step. Balinsasayaw is serene and mirror-like in the morning, its surface reflecting the cloud forest walls around it. Danao, a short trail further, sits in a deeper caldera with a more dramatic, crater-lake atmosphere. Guides know the best photography spots and the birds' feeding times. Return by midday for lunch in Valencia before heading back to Dumaguete. Book via Klook for a licensed local guide and a comfortable minivan transfer from Dumaguete.
