About this tour

Apo Island is one of the Philippines' great conservation success stories. In the 1980s, the local community declared the surrounding reef a protected marine sanctuary and banned commercial fishing entirely. Four decades later, the reef has recovered to become one of the most biodiverse dive and snorkel sites in Southeast Asia — and its population of green and hawksbill sea turtles is so large and so accustomed to snorkelers that encounters are virtually guaranteed on every visit.

The day trip from Dumaguete is a 40-minute speedboat crossing to the island, followed by guided snorkeling sessions at two or three different reef locations chosen based on tide and visibility. The turtles are the headline act: you'll find them grazing on sea grass, resting on coral ledges at 2–4 metres depth, and surfacing for air right beside you. The reef also supports healthy populations of reef fish, Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and — for the lucky — occasional sightings of thresher sharks and whale sharks in the deeper water offshore.

Between snorkeling sessions you have free time on the island's small beach, where the village community manages tourism with an admirable lightness of touch — no jet skis, no beach bars blasting music, no crowds. Lunch is a freshly cooked Filipino meal at a community-run hut. The whole day is a masterclass in what reef conservation can achieve when a community commits to it. Book via Klook for a well-organised operator with safety briefings, equipment, and a marine naturalist guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are sea turtle sightings guaranteed?
Near-certain — Apo Island has one of the largest resident sea turtle populations in the Philippines, and turtles are spotted on virtually every snorkel session. However, wildlife encounters can never be 100% guaranteed.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Basic swimming ability is sufficient. Life vests are available and the reef snorkeling is done in relatively calm water. Non-swimmers can participate with a life vest and guide.
Is Apo Island crowded?
The community strictly limits the number of visitors per day, so it never feels crowded even on popular dates. Book in advance to secure your spot.
