Corregidor Island Day Tour from Manila
About this tour
Corregidor Island sits like a stone sentinel at the entrance to Manila Bay, and for six months in 1941-42 it was the last Allied stronghold in the Philippines โ a 5.5-square-kilometer rock that General MacArthur called "the Rock." The island is now a national shrine and open-air museum, preserved almost exactly as the last defenders left it: rusting coastal artillery, concrete gun batteries, the eerie tunnels of Malinta, and the skeletal remains of barracks eaten by tropical jungle over 80 years.
The ferry from CCP pier takes about 1.5 hours, and the crossing itself offers spectacular views of Manila Bay and the Cavite and Bataan coastlines. On the island, a tram tour loops past Battery Way (12-inch Mortars), the Pacific War Memorial, and the ruins of the Officers' Club and Mile-Long Barracks โ once the largest military barracks in the world. The tour climax is Malinta Tunnel, a 253-meter underground complex carved by American engineers in the 1930s: a multi-sensory light-and-sound show brings the 1942 siege to life inside the tunnel itself.
Lunch is served at the island's restaurant before the afternoon ferry back. History enthusiasts should bring extra time for the museum, which houses a remarkable collection of WWII artifacts, personal effects of soldiers on both sides, and MacArthur memorabilia. Sunset on the return ferry โ with Manila's skyline appearing on the horizon โ is one of those travel moments that stays with you.
