Coron to Culion Island History & Beach Tour
About this tour
Culion Island carries one of the Philippines' most remarkable and moving histories. From 1906 to 1991, it was home to the world's largest leprosy colony — at its peak housing over 16,000 patients from across Southeast Asia. The American colonial government built a complete self-contained town: hospital, church, school, theatre, and fort, all still standing. In 1934, American doctor Victor Heiser announced the first successful cure for leprosy here — a discovery made on Culion that changed medicine worldwide.
Today Culion is a peaceful island town with immaculate colonial architecture, a fascinating museum chronicling the colony's history with dignity and compassion, and a Spanish-era fort offering panoramic views over the surrounding archipelago. The seafront promenade is lined with heritage buildings in better condition than most Philippine colonial towns.
The tour also includes a beach lunch stop at one of the beautiful islands between Coron and Culion, and a snorkel session at a reef rarely visited by tourists. It's one of the most culturally rich day trips from Coron — a moving, educational, and beautiful experience that most tourists skip entirely in favour of lagoons and wrecks.
