About this tour

The Cagayan Valley is one of the Philippines' most important and least-visited birding destinations. The valley's combination of habitats — extensive ricefields, oxbow lakes, Cagayan River riparian forest, Peñablanca karst limestone outcrops, and coastal mangroves near Aparri — supports an exceptional diversity of species, both residents and migrants.

For Philippine endemics, the Cagayan Valley delivers: the Luzon Bleeding-heart (a pigeon with a startling blood-red breast spot), the Philippine Coucal (large, conspicuous, and unmistakably called), the tiny Colasisi (hanging parrot) in fruiting trees, and the Cagayan Flowerpecker — a range-restricted endemic found almost exclusively in northern Luzon. The limestone forests around Peñablanca hold the secretive Cagayan Limestone Wren-Babbler, one of the most sought-after birds by visiting listers.

From October to March the wetlands fill with migrants from the north: little egrets, Whiskered Terns, Common Sandpipers, and the occasional rarity pushed off course by typhoons. The guide works three distinct habitat types in a morning: open ricefields at dawn for ground-feeders and raptors; the Cagayan River bank for kingfishers, herons, and waders; and a limestone forest patch for canopy species. Total morning species count in good conditions typically reaches 40-60 species, with the possibility of genuinely rare sightings for those with patience and a sharp eye.
