About this tour

White Beach gets all the attention, but Boracay's northern coastline tells a completely different story. Puka Shell Beach — named for the tiny cone shells that wash up in drifts along its entire length — is wider, more rugged, and dramatically less crowded than White Beach. The shells create a coarser underfoot texture and a more natural, undeveloped atmosphere. Fishermen still launch their bancas from here every morning, coconut palms lean towards the water, and on a good day you may have a long stretch of beach almost entirely to yourself.

The bat cave at Ilig-Iligan is a short walk from the beach through dense vegetation. Thousands of fruit bats roost in the cave ceiling during daylight hours — the sound of their rustling wings and the faint musty-sweet smell of the roost makes for an atmospheric, slightly gothic experience that contrasts sharply with the beach resort energy elsewhere on the island. Local guides explain the cave's geology and the important ecological role the bats play in pollinating the island's fruit trees.

The tour continues to Balinghai and Baling-Hai Beaches on the island's north-east coast — quieter, reef-fringed coves accessible only by boat or a steep staircase, where the snorkeling is excellent and the isolation is blissful. This is Boracay for people who have already done White Beach and want to see what the island looks like when you step away from the resort strip.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Puka Shell Beach from White Beach?
Puka Shell Beach is about 4 km from the White Beach Station 1 end. By tricycle it takes 15–20 minutes. Your tour transfer handles this, but it is also easy to visit independently.
Are the bats dangerous?
No. Philippine fruit bats are gentle, plant-eating animals that avoid humans. The cave guide keeps you at a safe distance from the colony. Rabies in fruit bats is extremely rare and there is no risk of bites if you do not attempt to touch them.
Is Puka Shell Beach good for swimming?
Yes, during the Amihan (dry) season November–April the north coast is calm and clear for swimming. During the Habagat (wet) season June–October, waves and currents can make swimming inadvisable — the bat cave and beach walk are still excellent.
