The Ivatan stone house is one of the most ingenious vernacular architecture solutions in the world. Built from limestone blocks quarried from Batan's volcanic hillsides, with walls up to a metre thick and a steep cogon-grass roof weighted down with stones, these homes were engineered to survive supertyphoons with winds above 250 kph — and they have, for 300 years.
