Batanes Cycling Tour — Green Hills & Stone Villages
About this tour
Batanes was made for cycling. The island's compact road network winds through a landscape that shifts from rolling green hills to dramatic sea cliffs, through clusters of stone houses and past free-roaming cattle — all with almost no traffic. On a calm morning, with only the sound of wind and birdsong, pedalling through Marlboro Country and feeling the Luzon Strait breeze is a transcendently peaceful experience.
The route loops from Basco town north to Naidi Hills for the panoramic plateau views, then south along the Pacific-facing coast past Ivana village's traditional boat shelters and the Japanese lighthouse ruins at Dipnanuman. The western leg passes through sweet potato and garlic fields tended by Ivatan families, with Mt Iraya volcano (1009 m) providing a constant backdrop — its summit is often ringed with cloud, which only adds to the atmosphere.
Mid-route the guide stops at a family home for the Ivatan snack: camote (sweet potato) boiled in coconut milk and fresh drinking coconut. The final descent back into Basco follows the coastal road with the Taiwan Strait visible on the horizon — on exceptionally clear days, the southern tip of Taiwan is discernible 190 km away. Total riding distance is approximately 35 km with 400 m of cumulative elevation.
