About this tour

While most of the Cagayan Valley has been converted to rice and corn agriculture, pockets of the original forest that once covered the entire valley survive in protected areas and watershed reserves. Arroceros Forest Park in Nueva Vizcaya is one such remnant — a stand of old-growth and secondary forest anchored by spectacular bamboo groves that rise like green cathedrals from the valley floor.

The Philippine giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) reaches 25 metres in height and 20 cm in diameter here, its culms so close together that walking between groves requires ducking and turning sideways. The grove is alive with sound: the deep wooden creaking of stems rubbing against each other in the wind, the percussion of fallen sections, and the constant fluting of bamboo warblers in the upper canopy. Photography here is remarkable — shafts of light filter through the canopy in green-gold columns that change angle by the minute.

Beyond the bamboo, the trail enters secondary dipterocarp forest where the guide identifies Philippine endemics: the lauan, yakal, and apitong hardwoods that once covered all of Luzon's lowlands; medicinal herbs used by local Yogad indigenous communities; and the rattan palms that climb toward the canopy in tight spirals. The Magat River at the forest edge provides a picnic spot and swimming hole — cold, clear mountain water that feels extraordinary after a forest morning. The trail back circles through ricefields where the contrast between the managed agricultural landscape and the wild forest behind it crystallises why remnant areas like this matter.

Frequently asked questions

How large is Arroceros Forest Park?
The Nueva Vizcaya forest park is significantly larger than its Manila namesake — a several-hundred-hectare old-growth remnant that provides critical watershed protection for the Magat River system.
Is the trail marked?
The main trails are marked and the eco-guide knows all branching paths. Wear long trousers and closed-toe shoes — the bamboo forest floor has sharp fallen culm sections.
