About this tour

Aglipay, a municipality in Quirino province, sits on top of one of the Philippines' least-known geological treasures: a limestone massif containing at least 33 mapped cave systems, with the likelihood of more unmapped chambers in the surrounding hills. The Aglipay Cave complex is scientifically significant, biologically extraordinary, and almost entirely unknown to travellers outside Cagayan Valley — which means you may have this extraordinary underground world largely to yourself.

Crystal Cave is the centrepiece: a chamber studded with selenite crystals and massive calcite formations that formed over millennia in total isolation. The crystals range from centimetre-scale needles in ceiling clusters to selenite plates the size of dinner tables protruding from the cave walls. The headlamp light catches the crystal faces at angles that make the chamber appear to be lined with broken mirrors. The approach involves crawling through a narrow squeeze passage and wading an underground stream chest-deep — the guide carries a rope for assistance and the reward is a chamber that feels genuinely otherworldly.

The bat colony that roosts in the Aglipay complex numbers over one million Rousettus amplexicaudatus — one of the largest concentrations in the Philippines. The emergence at dusk is an event of almost geological scale: the bat column pours from the cave mouth continuously for 20-30 minutes, spiralling upward and dispersing into the river valley in a living stream of black. Local eagles patrol the exit, plucking bats from the column mid-flight — predator and prey interacting at a scale rarely witnessed. Arriving at the cave in time for the emergence and watching it from the designated viewpoint with the guide explaining the ecology is an experience that far exceeds the effort of getting to Quirino.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Crystal Cave safe to enter?
Crystal Cave requires crawling through narrow passages and wading through underground streams. Fitness level moderate-high. The guide assesses conditions on the day and will not enter if water levels are unsafe.
How many caves can we visit in one day?
The tour typically covers 2-3 caves: an accessible show cave with lit pathways for orientation, Crystal Cave for the adventure, and a smaller chamber for the bat emergence. The full 33-cave system requires multiple visits and specialist equipment.
