Siargao vs Boracay: Which Philippines Island in 2026?

Siargao and Boracay are both in the Philippines, both have excellent beaches, and both attract a lot of international visitors. But they are fundamentally different experiences - different vibes, different demographics, different landscapes, and different activities. Choosing the wrong one for your travel style can make a good trip merely okay.

The Quick Answer

Choose Boracay if you want a classic beach resort holiday - long white sand beach, full service, international restaurants, water sports, and an active sunset/nightlife scene.

Choose Siargao if you want a more laid-back, nature-forward experience - surf culture, island-hopping on bangkas, lagoons, coconut palm roads, and better coffee.

The Beach

Boracay White Beach: 4 kilometers of powder-white sand with consistent fine texture and calm, clear water. The beach is wide, well-maintained (after the 2018 rehabilitation), and lined with restaurants and hotels directly on the sand. Beautiful, famous, and genuinely excellent.

Siargao General Luna: The main beach in front of General Luna is pretty but not the best on the island. The real beach experiences are on the day trips: Naked Island (pure sandbar), Daku Island (coconut palms over white sand), and various coves accessible by motorbike. Siargao's beaches are more varied and less developed than Boracay but require more effort to reach the good ones.

Surf

Boracay: Not a surf destination. There is a kite surfing scene at Bulabog Beach on the east coast (November to May, consistent trade winds) but no significant surf breaks. The calm west coast (White Beach) is exactly that - calm.

Siargao: The Philippines' surf capital. Cloud 9 is one of Asia's premier reef breaks - a powerful, hollow right-hander that hosts the annual Siargao Surf Cup. The surrounding breaks cater to all levels. If surfing is your priority, Siargao is the clear choice.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Boracay: Genuinely good nightlife. The Station 2 strip has multiple bars and restaurants open until 2-3am. Friday's Bar, Epic Bar, and several beachfront clubs are consistently busy in high season. The paraw (traditional sailboat) sunset cruises followed by dinner is a classic Boracay evening.

Siargao: Quieter nightlife. The General Luna main road has several good bars and restaurants that stay open late, but it is more of a community gathering than a full nightlife scene. Better for people who want a drink and conversation than a dance floor.

Infrastructure and Amenities

Boracay: Fully developed tourist resort infrastructure - international hotels, ATMs that work, supermarkets, pharmacies, fast WiFi, and consistent electricity. Convenience is Boracay's strength.

Siargao: Improving but limited. ATMs run out of cash on weekends; bring PHP from Cebu or Manila. Some areas have electricity from a generator only. WiFi is available but slower. This is part of Siargao's charm for some, a dealbreaker for others.

Prices

Both have a similar price range overall. Budget accommodation in Siargao is slightly cheaper (600-1,200 PHP/night vs 800-1,500 PHP/night in Boracay). Food is similarly priced. Activities cost differently: Boracay water sports (parasailing, banana boat) are per-activity. Siargao's island-hopping and surf costs are typically lower per day.

Verdict

For a classic Philippines beach holiday with convenience and a guaranteed great time: Boracay. For an experience that feels more like discovering somewhere special: Siargao. If you have the time, do a week at each - they are different enough that both justify a dedicated visit. See our 4-day Boracay itinerary and 5-day Siargao itinerary for planning.
