Everyone going to Surigao del Sur is chasing one thing — the famous Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls. Almost nobody continues a little further down the coast to Britania, a scattering of 24 tiny islands and sandbars in Lanuza Bay that delivers El Nido-style island hopping with a fraction of the people and prices. Powder-white islets, water so clear the boats look like they're floating on air, and a local-run boat scene that hasn't been swallowed by mass tourism. This is the Philippines island hop you brag about finding first.
Why go to Britania
Britania is genuine frontier island hopping in Mindanao's Caraga region. The seascapes rival the famous spots, but you'll often have entire sandbars to yourself. It pairs perfectly with Surigao del Sur's other wonders — the Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls are nearby — making this corner of Mindanao a quietly spectacular alternative to the over-touristed north.
The island-hopping highlights
- Naked Island (Hagonoy): a pure-white sandbar with not a single tree — just sand, sea and sky. The signature Britania shot.
- Hiyor-Hiyoran Island: a long, beautiful sandbar with shallow turquoise water, a favourite swimming and picnic stop.
- Boslon Island: the largest, with rock formations, a small forest and good snorkelling.
- Hagonoy & Vanishing Islands: sandbars that appear and disappear with the tide — pure desert-island magic.
Local boatmen run half- and full-day hopping circuits from Britania port; rates are modest and best arranged through your accommodation.
Combine with Surigao del Sur's icons
- Enchanted River (Hinatuan): a surreally blue, impossibly clear spring river that flows to the sea — one of the most beautiful natural pools in the country.
- Tinuy-an Falls (Bislig): the "Niagara of the Philippines" — a wide, multi-tiered curtain of water you can swim beneath.
- Cagwait Beach: a long white-sand stretch on the drive, a fine extra stop.
How to get to Britania
This is deep-Mindanao travel, and the journey is part of it:
- Fly into Butuan or Surigao City (connected to Manila and Cebu — see our flight search), or reach the region via Siargao if you're island-chaining.
- Travel overland to San Agustin, Surigao del Sur (the Britania jump-off) — a few hours by bus or van down the Caraga coast.
- From Britania port, hire a boat for the island-hopping circuit.
Many travellers tack Britania onto a Siargao trip, since they're in the same corner of Mindanao. Compare onward options with our ferry vs flight tool.
Where to stay
San Agustin and the Britania area have simple homestays and guesthouses (₱600–1,800) — basic, friendly and right by the jump-off. Bislig and Hinatuan have more options if you're touring the river and falls too. This is a homestay destination, not a resort one. Browse bases in our stays search.
Best time to visit
The drier months (roughly March to October in this part of Mindanao — Caraga's rain pattern differs from the rest of the country) give the calmest seas for hopping. The sandbars are tide-dependent, so a local guide times the circuit for you. Caraga sees its own rainy spells, so check the live sea-state & weather tracker before your boat day.
A Surigao del Sur plan
Day 1: arrive, base near Britania/San Agustin. Day 2: full-day Britania island hopping (Naked Island, Hiyor-Hiyoran, sandbars). Day 3: Enchanted River at noon (don't miss the fish-feeding) and Tinuy-an Falls. Day 4: travel onward — or to Siargao to combine surf with this hidden coast. Sketch the route in our planner.
Practical tips
- Bring cash — ATMs are scarce in the area.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a dry bag; sandbars have no shade.
- Charter a van for a day to link Britania, the Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls efficiently.
- Signal is patchy — download offline maps and keep our offline kit handy.
FAQ
Is Britania safe to visit?
The Caraga tourist areas (Surigao del Sur, Siargao) are well-traveled and welcoming. Check your government's advisory for Mindanao specifics; this northeastern corner is not among the cautioned areas.
How does it compare to El Nido?
Similar postcard sandbars and clear water, far fewer people and lower prices — but more effort to reach and simpler facilities.
How many days do I need?
2–3 days to combine the islands with the Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls.
Plan it: flights to Surigao/Butuan, the routes from Siargao, and check the sea state before hopping.
