Get Scuba Certified in the Philippines: PADI, Freediving & Where to Learn (2026)

Few places make learning to dive as easy β€” or as gorgeous β€” as the Philippines. Warm, clear water, a price tag a fraction of what you'd pay in Europe or Australia, instructors on practically every tourist island, and reefs that make the open-water checkout dives genuinely memorable instead of a muddy quarry. If you've ever thought "I should get certified," this is the place. Here's exactly how.

Which certification, and what it actually gets you

What it costs (and why it's a bargain here)

Real 2026 ranges, including equipment and certification fees:

Prices vary by island (Malapascua and Coron run higher for their famous dives). Ask whether certification fees, manuals and gear are included β€” reputable schools quote all-in.

The best islands to learn on

Moalboal, Cebu β€” the easy all-rounder

Shore-entry diving (you walk in from the beach), the legendary sardine run metres offshore, sea turtles, and a wall that drops into the blue β€” all beginner-friendly. Cheap, social, packed with dive schools. The most popular place in the country to get certified, for good reason.

Panglao, Bohol β€” calm water, big variety

Gentle conditions ideal for first-timers, plus Balicasag island's reefs and a thriving freediving scene. Easy to combine course days with non-diving relaxation for travel companions.

Dauin / Dumaguete β€” muck diving & macro

Calm black-sand sites full of weird critters (seahorses, frogfish, nudibranchs). A favourite for those who want a relaxed, less crowded learning base.

Coron, Palawan β€” for the wrecks (once you're certified)

You can learn here, but Coron's magic is its WWII wreck dives β€” better as an Advanced/return destination. Get Open Water elsewhere, come here to use it.

Malapascua β€” thresher sharks (Advanced territory)

The only reliable place on Earth to see thresher sharks daily, on an early-morning deep dive. Not a beginner site β€” but a powerful reason to continue to Advanced.

How to pick a dive school (safety first)

Practical planning

A perfect "learn to dive" week

Days 1–4: Open Water in Moalboal (course + checkout dives, sardine run, turtles). Days 5–6: Advanced β€” add deep and night dives. Day 7: fun dives or travel (no flying!). You leave a certified diver with the licence for life, for under what a single course costs back home.

FAQ

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need basic comfort in water and to swim a short distance unaided β€” no athletic ability required. Freediving has slightly higher comfort demands.

Is it safe to learn here?

Yes, at a reputable school with proper ratios and gear. Diving's safety record is excellent when standards are followed β€” vet the school, not just the price.

Can non-divers come along?

Absolutely β€” Moalboal, Panglao and Dumaguete all have plenty to do topside, so travel companions aren't stuck waiting.

How long is the certification valid?

Open Water is for life. If you haven't dived in a while, a short refresher (half a day) gets you current again.
