El Nido or Coron: Which Palawan Destination Is Right for You?

Every traveler planning a Palawan trip faces the same question within minutes of opening a map: El Nido or Coron? Both are spectacular. Both are bucket-list worthy. But they are genuinely different experiences, and choosing the wrong one for your travel style can leave you wondering what you missed. This guide gives you an honest detailed comparison so you can make the call with confidence.

The Quick Answer

El Nido wins on lagoons, beach scenery, and romantic atmosphere. Coron wins on wreck diving, lake swimming, and raw adventure. If you can only pick one and you have never been to either, El Nido edges ahead for most first-time visitors. If you dive or want something slightly off the beaten path, Coron is extraordinary.

Getting There: Accessibility

El Nido

The main gateway is Puerto Princesa (PPS), followed by a 5-hour van ride north through the Palawan jungle. El Nido Airport occasionally offers direct flights from Manila and Cebu on Air Juan and SkyJet, cutting the journey to about an hour. Check schedules well in advance as seats sell out quickly.

Coron

Coron has its own airport (USU) with direct flights from Manila on Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia. Flight time is just over an hour, making Coron arguably easier to reach from Manila.

Landscapes and Scenery

El Nido: Lagoons and Limestone Towers

El Nido sits at the heart of the Bacuit Archipelago, a cluster of 45 karst islands. The defining feature is the scale of the limestone formations - some rise 200 meters straight from the sea. Hidden lagoons, secret beaches, and interconnected cave passages create a geography that rewards exploration. See our complete Tours A-D guide.

Coron: Lakes, Reefs, and Sunken Ships

Coron Island is dominated by volcanic lakes, the most famous being Kayangan Lake, consistently ranked among the clearest water in the Philippines. The surrounding bay holds 12 Japanese warships sunk during World War II, now home to incredible marine life. Read our dedicated guides to Kayangan Lake and Coron wreck diving.

Beaches

El Nido has the edge on pure beach quality. 7 Commandos Beach, Nacpan Beach, and Las Cabanas Beach rank among the best in the Philippines. The sand is fine, the water is calm in dry season, and the setting backed by jungle and framed by limestone towers is cinematic. Coron's beaches are fewer and less polished, though CYC Beach and nearby spots are genuinely lovely.

Diving and Snorkeling

Snorkeling

Both destinations offer excellent snorkeling. El Nido's Shimizu Island and Helicopter Island have healthy coral gardens. Coron's reefs around Siete Pecados Marine Park are also impressive.

Scuba Diving

Coron wins decisively. The WW2 wrecks are world-famous: the Okikawa Maru, Akitsushima seaplane tender, and Irako supply ship are among the most compelling wreck dives in Asia. El Nido has decent diving at Dilumacad Island and South Miniloc but cannot match Coron's wreck heritage.

Budget Comparison

El Nido has become significantly more expensive over the past decade. Expect to pay 1,200 to 1,800 pesos per person for island-hopping tours. Coron is generally 15 to 20 percent cheaper for similar accommodation and tours. Both towns have a wide range of restaurants where you can eat a full meal for 200 to 400 pesos.

How to Do Both

The best option is to do both. The El Nido to Coron ferry (3 to 4 hours on a fast craft) is one of the great coastal journeys in the Philippines. Start in El Nido, spend 3 to 4 days doing the tours, then travel to Coron for diving and lake swimming. Our El Nido to Coron travel guide covers every route option.

The Verdict

Choose El Nido if you want the most jaw-dropping lagoon scenery in the Philippines, if you are traveling with a partner on a romantic trip, or if this is your first time in Palawan. Choose Coron if you dive or want to learn wreck diving, if you prefer fewer crowds and a rawer atmosphere, or if you are returning to Palawan and ready to go deeper. Either way, Palawan will exceed every expectation you arrive with.
