Manila Travel Guide 2026: What to See, Do and Eat

Most travelers do Manila wrong. They land at NAIA, spend 6 hours in a hotel in Makati or BGC, make a single trip to Intramuros, and leave for Palawan or Cebu convinced they have done Manila. They have not. Manila is one of the most layered cities in Asia where 450 years of colonial history, 20th-century American influence, postwar reconstruction, and 21st-century economic acceleration have created neighborhoods that feel like different cities stacked together. It rewards the traveler who slows down, eats widely, and engages with its contradictions.

Understanding Manila's Geography

Manila is both a specific city and the colloquial name for the entire Metropolitan area. Most travelers split their time between Intramuros and Ermita for the historical center, Binondo for Chinatown food and history, Makati CBD for upscale hotels and restaurants, Bonifacio Global City or BGC for the modern business district, Malate and Paco for old residential neighborhoods with emerging cafe culture, and Quezon City for Maginhawa food street and museums.

Intramuros and Fort Santiago represent the 16th-century walled city essential for any Manila education. Budget half a day minimum. See the complete Intramuros guide for detailed coverage.

The Binondo Chinatown Food Tour covers the world's oldest Chinatown from 1594 and Manila's best food neighborhood. The Binondo Food Tour hits every essential stop.

The National Museum Complex is free to enter and houses Juan Luna's Spoliarium, possibly the single most important painting in Philippine art history, in a gorgeous neoclassical building. The National Museum of Anthropology and Natural History are in adjacent buildings in Rizal Park.

BGC Street Art has developed one of the most concentrated collections of public street art in Southeast Asia with murals covering entire building facades commissioned from Filipino and international artists.

Where to Eat in Manila

For traditional Filipino food, Manam Comfort Filipino at multiple locations offers the best modern interpretation of Filipino classics. Locavore in Kapitolyo uses farm-to-table Filipino with local producers. Aristocrat Restaurant on Roxas Boulevard has been a Manila institution since 1936.

For street food, Maginhawa Street in Quezon City is the most concentrated street food strip in Metro Manila. The Salcedo Weekend Market in Makati on Saturday mornings offers the best quality-controlled street food in Manila.

For specialty coffee, Manila's scene has exploded with Yardstick Coffee at several locations and Cafe Idalio being reference points. Benguet Arabica from the Cordillera highlands is the local bean to ask for.

Getting Around Manila

Manila traffic is one of the world's most severe. Grab is the default for most travelers offering reliable, meter-free, air-conditioned transport. LRT and MRT elevated rail lines are fast and cover major routes though peak-hour crowds are intense. Jeepneys are the cultural experience with routes logical once you learn them. Traffic is worst Monday to Friday from 7 to 9am and 5 to 8pm. Sunday morning is the best time to move around Manila.
