Vigan is the best-preserved Spanish colonial city in Asia — a living UNESCO World Heritage town where 16th-century stone mansions line cobblestone streets unchanged for four centuries. Located in Ilocos Sur on the northwest Luzon coast, it is compact enough to cover on foot or by kalesa in a day, but rewarding enough to deserve two. The food alone justifies the trip north.
Best time to visit
November to May is dry and comfortable. June to October brings occasional rain but fewer tourists — the streets of Calle Crisologo are genuinely atmospheric in light rain. Avoid Holy Week (March/April) when accommodation fills weeks ahead.
How to get there
Fly from Manila to Laoag (IAO, 45 min) then take a bus or van south to Vigan (about 1 hour, PHP 80-120). Alternatively, take a direct overnight bus from Manila's Cubao or Pasay terminals (Partas, Philippine Rabbit) — 8 to 10 hours, PHP 700-900, and you arrive at dawn when Calle Crisologo is empty and golden.
