Most travellers find the Philippines genuinely friendly and safe. The risks that matter are the unglamorous ones — sun, sea and scheduling — plus the usual city smarts.
The sea is the real hazard
- Swim inside marked areas; currents off beaches like Boracay’s Bulabog side are stronger than they look.
- Check the weather before any island hop — bangka trips cancel for a reason.
- Reef-safe sunscreen only: some destinations fine swimmers for the regular kind.
City basics
- Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps; agree on the fare before boarding tricycles.
- Keep your phone zipped away in crowded terminals and jeepney stops.
- Carry a photocopy or phone photo of your passport — leave the original in the hotel safe.
Health and money
- Drink bottled or purified water — tap water is not for drinking.
- ATMs are plentiful in cities but scarce on small islands; land with enough cash for a few days.
- Buy travel insurance that covers boat transfers and diving if you plan either.
The one habit that matters
Pad your schedule. Ferries cancel, traffic stalls and weather turns — travellers who leave a spare buffer day almost never have a bad trip. The Philippines rewards the unhurried.
