Surigao del Sur Travel Guide 2026 — Britania Islands, Tinuy-an Falls & Enchanted River

Surigao del Sur sits on Mindanao's Pacific coast with the kind of natural wealth that travel writers reach for superlatives to describe — and then find that the superlatives are literally accurate. Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig is genuinely called the Niagara of the Philippines not as marketing exaggeration but because the tiered curtain of water is 55 metres wide and drops 180 metres in a solid wall of white at peak flow, a scale that hits you physically when you stand before it. An hour north at San Agustin, the Britania Island Group lines up 24 forested limestone islets in turquoise water so clear you can see the coral from the surface. Then there is the Hinatuan Enchanted River, whose spring-fed waters are a shade of luminous deep cobalt-blue that no photograph fully captures. Three of Mindanao's most photogenic natural phenomena, one province.

Best time to visit

October to May is the general dry season and the prime window for travel, but Surigao del Sur has some nuance. Tinuy-an Falls is actually most dramatic from June to November when rain keeps the water volume at maximum — the full 55-metre-wide curtain only appears during and after the rainy season. In the dry months (February–May) the falls are still beautiful but narrower, with more rock face visible. For Britania Islands and Hinatuan Enchanted River, October to May gives calm seas, better snorkeling visibility (8–20 metres), and reliable banca operations. December through February is the sweet spot for balancing all three: falls are still flowing well after the rains, seas are calming, and Christmas holidays bring festive energy to the towns. July–September sees the heaviest rain and roughest Pacific swells, making island-hopping difficult, though the falls are extraordinary then.

How to get there

The nearest commercial airport is Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City (DAV), not Surigao Airport (SUG), which serves Surigao City 4 hours north and is the less practical option for the falls and Britania. From Davao to Bislig (Tinuy-an Falls): take a van from Davao Ecoland Transport Terminal directly to Bislig City (4 hours, PHP 250–300 per person, departures from 5 AM). From Bislig to Tinuy-an Falls is a 30-minute habal-habal or tricycle ride (PHP 50–100). From Davao to San Agustin (Britania Islands): van to Barobo or straight to San Agustin (4.5–5 hours, PHP 280–350). From Davao to Hinatuan Enchanted River: van to Hinatuan town (3.5–4 hours, PHP 220–280), then tricycle to the river (PHP 30–50). All three sites can be combined in a multi-day road trip from Davao heading north along the Pacific coast. For travellers flying into Surigao City (SUG) from Cebu or Manila, travel south by van (4 hours to San Agustin, then further to Bislig) — less efficient but workable.
