Malapascua: Everything About the Thresher Shark Capital of the World
Malapascua Island in northern Cebu is famous for exactly one thing above all others: it is the only place in the world where scuba divers can reliably encounter thresher sharks in shallow water every single morning. This one fact has turned a small, 2.5-kilometer-long island into one of the global diving community most coveted destinations. But Malapascua is more than just thresher sharks - it is a genuinely beautiful island with excellent beaches, world-class diving across multiple species and habitats, and an authentic Filipino evening scene.
The Thresher Shark Dive
Thresher sharks visit Monad Shoal, a submerged seamount approximately 30 minutes by boat from Malapascua, in the early morning hours to have parasites cleaned by smaller fish at cleaning stations. Divers descend to 25-30 meters depth and wait quietly along the sloping wall while the sharks - with their extraordinarily long tail fins - glide past sometimes within meters. Dives begin before dawn with boat departures at 5-5:30am. Success rate for thresher shark sightings exceeds 90 percent when seas are calm, making it one of the most reliable big animal diving experiences anywhere in the world.
Other Marine Life
Banded sea snakes cluster in extraordinary numbers at Gato Island, an uninhabited rocky island 30 minutes away. Mandarin fish (one of the worlds most colorful marine creatures) perform their evening mating ritual at rubble dive sites around Malapascua every sunset. Manta rays are occasionally encountered. The macro life including pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and frogfish is outstanding throughout the year.
