Malapascua
Intro
Malapascua is a speck of an island off the northern tip of Cebu, barely 2.5 km long, ringed with powder-white sand. But divers do not cross half the world for the beaches. They come for one thing: the thresher sharks of Monad Shoal.
This underwater seamount, a short boat ride from the island, is the only place on the planet where you can reliably encounter pelagic thresher sharks on a daily basis. Every morning before sunrise, these elegant, doe-eyed sharks with their absurdly long scythe-like tails rise from the deep to visit cleaning stations on the reef. Slip into the water in the half-light, hover quietly behind a rope, and watch one of the ocean's most graceful predators glide past at arm's length.
Beyond the threshers, Malapascua delivers Gato Island's caves and sea snakes, mellow Bounty Beach sunsets, and the impossibly photogenic Kalanggaman Island sandbar day trip. Small, laid-back, and free of mega-resorts, it still feels like a secret.

First-timer essentials
- Visa: Most nationalities (EU, US, UK, Australia, Singapore, most ASEAN) get a free 30-day visa on arrival. Carry proof of onward travel.
- Currency: Philippine Peso (PHP). Roughly USD 1 = PHP 57, EUR 1 = PHP 61, SGD 1 = PHP 42 (rates fluctuate).
- Health: No mandatory vaccines for most travelers. There are no hospitals on Malapascua, only a small health center, so divers should carry comprehensive dive insurance (DAN is standard). The nearest decompression chamber and full hospital are in Cebu City, hours away. Drink bottled or filtered water.
- Money & ATMs: Bring cash. Malapascua has only a couple of small, unreliable ATMs that frequently run dry. Most dive shops and guesthouses prefer cash; many do not take cards. Withdraw in Cebu City or at Maya before crossing.
- Safety: Very safe with minimal crime; the main risks are dive-related. Respect surface intervals and depth limits (Monad Shoal ~16-25 m), dive within your certification, and never push no-deco limits. There is no decompression chamber on the island.
Top things to do
- Thresher shark dive at Monad Shoal (PHP 2,500-3,500 per dive) - The bucket-list dive. Boats leave ~4:30-5:00am to reach the shoal at first light. You descend to ~16-25 m and wait behind a rope as the sharks emerge from the blue. Advanced Open Water (or equivalent depth experience) strongly recommended; price plus a sanctuary fee.
- Gato Island dive (~PHP 3,000-4,000 per dive, often a 2-3 dive day trip) - A protected sanctuary ~45 min away, famous for a swim-through tunnel, white-tip reef sharks, banded sea snakes, frogfish and seahorses.
- Relax on Bounty Beach (free) - The island's main stretch of soft white sand, lined with dive shops and beach bars. Calm swimmable water and gorgeous sunsets.
- Kalanggaman Island day trip (~PHP 1,500-2,500 per person joining a group) - A flawless, ribbon-thin white sandbar off Leyte, ~1-1.5 hrs by boat, with a small island environmental fee. One of the most photogenic spots in the Philippines.
- Snorkeling and shallow reefs (free to ~PHP 1,000 with gear and boat) - House reefs, the Dona Marilyn wreck (deeper, for certified divers), and coral gardens teeming with fish.
- Lighthouse walk and island stroll (free) - Wander to the small lighthouse for sunset views, or follow sandy paths through fishing villages to quieter northern beaches.
Best time to visit
October to May (dry season) brings calmer seas, better visibility and reliable boats. Thresher sharks are seen year-round, but flat morning seas make the early dives far more comfortable. June to early October brings rain, rougher crossings and a small typhoon chance, with lower prices and crowds. December to April is busiest; for a quieter island aim for late October-November or May.
Getting there
Malapascua sits off the northern tip of Cebu, near the port town of Maya.
- Cebu City to Maya (~4-5 hours): From the Cebu North Bus Terminal, take a Ceres bus toward Maya (via Bogo), ~PHP 200-250 aircon. Faster shared vans cover it in ~4 hrs.
- Maya port to Malapascua (~30 min by bangka): Public outrigger boats, ~PHP 100-200 per person, leave when full during daylight. A private charter runs a few hundred to ~1,000 pesos.
Leave Cebu City early - the last public boats from Maya stop in the late afternoon. Total ~5-6 hrs door to door.
From Singapore
Fly SIN-CEB direct (~3.5-4 hrs) on Cebu Pacific, Scoot and others; one-stop via Manila is also common. From Mactan-Cebu Airport, get to the Cebu North Bus Terminal (~30-45 min), then follow the route to Maya and across to Malapascua. Overnight in Cebu City if you land late - the journey north is long and island boats stop by late afternoon.

FAQ
Are thresher sharks really seen every day at Monad Shoal? It is the only known site with reliable, near-daily thresher sightings, thanks to the cleaning stations they visit each morning. Nothing in nature is 100% guaranteed, but sighting rates are remarkably high on calm dawn dives.
Do I need to be a certified diver to see the threshers? Yes. Monad Shoal is a deep dive (~16-25 m) in low light, so you need at least Open Water, with Advanced Open Water strongly recommended. Non-divers can enjoy snorkeling, Bounty Beach and Kalanggaman; some shops offer try-dives and courses.
How do I get to Malapascua from Cebu City? Ceres bus or shared van from the Cebu North Bus Terminal to Maya port (~4-5 hrs), then a bangka (~30 min) to the island. Leave early to catch a public boat before they stop.
Is there an ATM on the island? Bring plenty of cash. The couple of small ATMs often run out or go offline and may charge high fees. Most dive shops and guesthouses prefer cash.
When is the best time to dive Malapascua? October to May for the calmest seas and best visibility. Threshers appear year-round, but June to early October brings rain and rougher crossings (with lower prices and crowds).
