Mactan
Intro
Mactan is the easiest tropical landing in the Philippines. The moment your plane touches down at Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you are already on the island - not a ferry or winding road away. Within 15 to 30 minutes you can be barefoot at a beach resort, or motoring out on a banca toward turquoise sandbars that vanish at high tide.
This narrow coral island sits just off the east coast of Cebu, joined to the mainland and Cebu City by two bridges. It is compact and built for travelers: resorts line the eastern shore, dive shops cluster near the reefs, and harbors are full of outrigger boats. It is also where Philippine history turned a corner - in 1521, chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated Ferdinand Magellan here in the Battle of Mactan.
Come for the beaches and easy access, stay for the underwater world. The reefs around Mactan and nearby islets are some of the most accessible great diving and snorkeling in the country.

First-timer essentials
- Visa: Most nationalities (ASEAN, EU, UK, US, Australia, Singapore) get a free 30-day visa on arrival, extendable at a Bureau of Immigration office. Confirm rules for your passport; you may be asked for an onward ticket.
- Currency: The Philippine peso (PHP). Roughly 50-58 PHP to 1 USD and ~40-43 PHP to 1 SGD; rates move.
- Health: No special vaccines required for most travelers. Drink bottled or filtered water. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, repellent, and any medication. Dengue exists - use repellent at dawn and dusk. Dive insurance is recommended if you plan to dive.
- Money & ATMs: ATMs are at the airport, malls and near resorts; most charge ~PHP 250 per withdrawal with limits (often 10,000-20,000 PHP). Resorts, dive shops and bigger restaurants take cards; carry cash for tricycles, market stalls and boat crews.
- Safety: Relaxed and tourist-friendly. Use normal sense at night, agree transport fares first, and book island hopping and dives through reputable operators who provide life jackets and check the weather.
Top things to do
- Island hopping to Hilutungan, Nalusuan and the sandbars - The signature day out. Snorkel the Hilutungan Marine Sanctuary, swim off Nalusuan, and stand on the Caohagan and Pandanon sandbars at low tide. ~PHP 1,500-3,000 per person for a joined group tour with lunch, gear and fees (private boats higher).
- Diving and snorkeling the Mactan reefs - A top spot for a first dive. "Discover Scuba" beginner experience ~PHP 2,500-4,500; certified fun dives ~PHP 1,500-2,500 each with gear. Reefs like Marigondon and Kontiki offer walls, soft corals and turtles. Snorkel-only trips from ~PHP 800-1,500.
- A beach resort day pass or stay - The eastern shore is wall-to-wall resorts. Day passes (~PHP 1,000-2,500) include pool, beach and a food credit. Overnight from ~PHP 2,500 to 12,000+ for luxury.
- Lapu-Lapu Shrine / Mactan Shrine - Free. A seaside memorial marking the 1521 Battle of Mactan, with a towering Lapu-Lapu statue and the Magellan marker.
- Sunset cruise on Mactan Channel - Evening banca or catamaran cruises with snacks/drinks, ~PHP 1,500-3,500 per person. The sky turns gold over the water with Cebu's skyline in the distance.
- Mactan Newtown Beach and the seafood scene - Eat sutukil-style (sugba/grilled, tula/soup, kilaw/ceviche) where you pick it fresh, ~PHP 500-1,200 per person.
Best time to visit
Dry season (roughly December to May) is prime: sunny skies, calm seas, best visibility for diving. March to May is hottest and busiest (peaks around Holy Week). June to November brings afternoon showers and a small typhoon chance, but rain often comes in short bursts, with lower prices and quieter beaches.
Getting there
Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) sits on Mactan Island itself - the Philippines' second-busiest airport.
- Airport to resorts: Most eastern-shore resorts are 15-30 min away. Taxi/Grab ~PHP 200-500; resort transfers ~PHP 500-1,500.
- To Cebu City: Two bridges connect Mactan to the mainland; taxi/Grab 30-60 min, ~PHP 250-500. The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) speeds some routes.
- Getting around: Tricycles for short hops (agree the fare), jeepneys on set routes, Grab/taxis for longer trips.
From Singapore
Direct flights from Singapore (SIN) to Cebu (CEB) run ~3.5-4 hrs on Cebu Pacific, Scoot and Singapore Airlines (seasonal). Because the airport is on Mactan, you can be at a beach resort within half an hour - no ferry or long transfer. Book a few months ahead and avoid Singapore school holidays for the best fares.

FAQ
Is Mactan Island the same as Cebu? Not quite. Mactan is a separate island off the east coast of Cebu (home to Lapu-Lapu City and the airport), connected to mainland Cebu by two bridges.
Should I stay in Mactan or Cebu City? Mactan is best for beaches, resorts, diving and airport access. Cebu City is better for history, food and as a base for south-Cebu trips. Many do both.
How much does Mactan island hopping cost? A joined group tour with lunch, gear and fees is ~PHP 1,500-3,000 per person. Private charters cost more. Confirm what is included.
Is the water good right off the beach? Many resorts have lovely beachfronts, but the shoreline can be shallow with seagrass; the clearest water and best coral are a short boat ride away at the sanctuaries and sandbars.
Can I visit on a layover? Yes. Because the airport is on the island, even a long layover fits a resort day pass, the Lapu-Lapu Shrine, or a short snorkeling trip. For island hopping, allow most of a day.
