Legazpi is the capital of Albay province and the main gateway to the Bicol region, dominated at every angle by Mayon Volcano — a near-perfect 2,462-metre stratovolcano that has erupted 51 times and is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. The city is compact and easy to navigate, with a growing cafe scene, superb Bicolano food, and a range of volcano-facing activities that make it a comfortable 2–3 day base for the whole region.
Best time to visit
December to May is dry season and offers the clearest views of Mayon's cone. June to November brings typhoon season and frequent cloud cover, though the volcano peeks through on most mornings.
