While everyone flies south to Palawan and Siargao, the cool kids of Manila quietly drive north for the weekend. La Union — "Elyu" to locals — is the easiest surf escape in the Philippines: gentle beginner waves, a creative café-and-cocktail scene that punches way above the town's size, and a slow coastal vibe you can reach without a single flight. It's where Manila learns to surf, and it deserves a spot on far more itineraries than it gets.
Why go to La Union
La Union is the anti-bucket-list destination — you don't come for one epic sight, you come to slow down. Surf in the morning, drink excellent third-wave coffee at noon, nap, sunset beers on the sand, repeat. It's the Philippines' surf-town culture without the flight to Siargao, which makes it the perfect long-weekend reset or a relaxed stop on a North Luzon route.
Surfing in La Union
San Juan is the surf capital, and this is one of the best places in the country to learn. The beach breaks at Urbiztondo are forgiving, surf schools line the shore, and a lesson runs ₱400–500/hour including board. Surf season is roughly October to March (the bigger, cleaner swells); the rest of the year brings smaller, even more beginner-friendly waves. Experienced surfers will find punchier reef breaks nearby. Board rental is ₱200–300/hour if you're already up.

- The café & food scene: San Juan is genuinely a foodie surf town — specialty coffee roasters, surf-shack cafés, craft beer, wood-fired pizza and great brunch. Half the fun of Elyu is the eating.
- Tangadan Falls: a short trek and swim to a lovely waterfall and natural pool, an easy half-day inland.
- Ma-Cho Temple & Bahay na Bato: a Taoist temple with sea views and a quirky shell-covered house — easy culture stops.
- Grape & dragonfruit farms: seasonal pick-your-own spots that surprise first-timers — this stretch of Luzon grows grapes.
- Sunset at the beach: the west-facing coast means the sun drops straight into the South China Sea — bring a San Miguel.
How to get to La Union
This is La Union's superpower: no flight needed. From Manila it's a 4–6 hour drive or bus up the expressway (Partas, Dominion and others run comfortable coaches from Cubao/Pasay for ₱400–600). Premium point-to-point vans cut the time and hassle. Many Manila travellers simply road-trip up Friday night and back Sunday. If you're continuing a North Luzon loop, La Union pairs naturally with Vigan, Ilocos and Baguio.
Where to stay
San Juan (Urbiztondo) is where you want to be — walkable to the surf, cafés and nightlife. Options run from social surf hostels (₱500–900/bed) to stylish boutique stays and beachfront resorts (₱2,500–6,000+). Book ahead for weekends and surf season, when Manila empties onto this beach. Best time to visit
Surfers: October–March for the swell. Sun-and-chill: the dry months (Nov–May) for reliable beach weather. Weekends are lively and busier; midweek is blissfully quiet if you can swing it. Check seasonal patterns in our best time to visit guide.
A perfect La Union weekend
Friday: evening bus/drive from Manila, late check-in, beach bar. Saturday: morning surf lesson, café crawl, Tangadan Falls or a farm, sunset and dinner in San Juan. Sunday: dawn surf, lazy brunch, drive home by afternoon. Two nights is enough to reset; three lets you actually improve at surfing.
Practical tips
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard — the surf sun is fierce.
- Weekends book out; reserve your stay and reserve a Friday-night bus seat.
- An eSIM keeps maps and ride apps working (guide).
- Combine with Vigan/Ilocos for a fuller North Luzon trip — sketch it in our trip planner.
FAQ

How many days do I need?
A weekend (2 nights) is the classic; 3 nights if you want to genuinely learn to surf or add inland trips.
