Donsol is a quiet fishing town in Sorsogon that happens to host the largest known congregation of whale sharks on the planet. Every season from November to June, butanding (the local name for whale sharks) gather in the warm Ticao Pass, and since 1998 the town has run one of the most ethically managed wildlife interaction programs in Southeast Asia. There is no feeding, no touching, no flash photography — just you, a snorkel, and a 12-metre fish.
Best time to visit
January to April is peak season with sighting rates around 70–80%. November and December are quieter with slightly lower odds but far fewer tourists.
How to get there
Fly to Legazpi Airport (BHO) in Albay, then take a 2-hour bus or van south to Donsol town; a one-way van hire costs around PHP 1,500. Alternatively, bus from Cubao (Manila) overnight, 10–11 hours to Sorsogon City, then 45 minutes to Donsol.
