Camotes Island: Cebu Peaceful Alternative to the Crowds
Camotes Island sits in the Camotes Sea between Cebu and Leyte, representing a Philippines that many visitors never get to experience - the version without the tourist infrastructure, without the crowds, and without the Instagram-optimized resort experience. What Camotes has instead is genuinely beautiful nature, warm and unhurried local life, and the particular peace that comes from a destination that has not yet been discovered by mainstream tourism.
Getting to Camotes
Regular ferries depart from Pier 11 in Cebu City (about 2.5 hours) and from Danao City Port which is closer (about 1.5 hours). The Danao route is more popular with locals and typically cheaper. There are no direct international connections - you come through Cebu.
Best Things to Do
Santiago Bay
Santiago Bay on Pacijan Island is the star attraction. The crescent of white sand fringed by coconut palms and backed by the village of Santiago is exactly what people imagine when they picture an undiscovered Philippine beach. The water is calm, clear, and shallow.

Browse tours →Lake Danao
Lake Danao is a freshwater lake surrounded by lush forest in the interior of Poro Island - entirely unlike the beach experiences that dominate Philippine tourism. Kayaking and picnicking make for a quietly memorable afternoon.
Buho Rock Resort
A dramatic rocky outcrop over the sea with a natural swimming pool formed by the rocks. At high tide the pool fills with ocean water and provides excellent snorkeling with spectacular views over the Camotes Sea.
Timubo Cave
A sea cave with an underground pool of crystal-clear water. Visitors swim through a low entrance into a cathedral-like cavern lit from above through cracks in the rock ceiling.
Practical Information
Rent a motorbike (P400-600 per day) or hire a tricycle for the day (P800-1,200). Bring sufficient cash as ATMs are very limited. The best time to visit is November through May. Explore Cebu island activities to combine Camotes with other Cebu region experiences.
