About this tour

Wawa Dam and Montalban Gorge form one of the most underrated adventure combinations in Rizal province — dramatic scenery, genuine history, and impressive geological formations all within 25 km of Quezon City's eastern edge. For Manileños, this is the wild east in your own backyard.

Wawa Dam was built in 1909 and served as Metro Manila's main water source for decades before Angat Dam replaced it. Today the reservoir is a serene kayaking destination, its calm green waters reflecting the forested hillsides of the Sierra Madre. The dam structure itself — a massive colonial-era stone arch — is photogenic and historically significant. A short kayak across the reservoir leads to the trailhead for Montalban Gorge.

The gorge is a narrow limestone canyon carved by the Marikina River, its walls rising 30–40 metres above the river. During World War II, Filipino guerrillas used the cave systems within the gorge as hideouts from Japanese forces — some of these caves are part of the guided trek. The trail combines river crossing, boulder scrambling, and canyon walking through a landscape that feels genuinely remote despite its proximity to Metro Manila. Return across the reservoir by kayak as the afternoon light catches the old dam walls. A cold local beer at the dam-side sari-sari store has never tasted better.
