Vigan to Burgos Sand Dunes ATV Adventure

Most visitors come to Vigan for cobblestones and cathedrals — few know that 30 minutes north lie the La Paz Sand Dunes, an expanse of wind-sculpted golden dunes that feel more like the Sahara than the Philippines. This is one of the country's few inland desert landscapes, and an ATV is the perfect way to tear through it.

Your guide leads you on a convoy of ATVs across crests and valleys of fine sand, with the South China Sea glittering in the distance. The riding circuit passes a Spanish-era watchtower that once stood sentinel against pirates, now partially swallowed by the dunes — a surreal sight. The black-sand beach at the edge of the dunes is an excellent picnic and photo spot.

For the brave, sandboarding down the steepest faces is available as an add-on: a board, a wax rub, and a push from your guide is all you need. The return route loops back through coconut groves before dropping you at the base camp where cold drinks await. The whole adventure takes about 3 hours and works perfectly as a morning activity before your Vigan heritage walk in the afternoon.
