Tibiao River Kayaking & Rappelling Adventure — Antique
About this tour
Tibiao in northern Antique is the outdoor adventure capital of Panay Island — a quiet river town that has developed one of the Philippines' most complete eco-adventure packages around its pristine namesake river. The Tibiao River flows from the Antique Range through a landscape of bamboo forests, limestone cliffs, and agricultural communities before reaching the Sulu Sea, and the kayaking route along its lower section is a genuinely beautiful 6 km journey through scenery that receives very few foreign visitors.
The kayak launch point is at the Kayak Inn, an eco-lodge built by the local community on the riverbank. Your guide fits equipment, gives a 20-minute paddling and safety briefing, then leads the group downstream through the bamboo-shaded upper section where the river is calm and birdwatching is rewarding — Philippine kingfishers, reef egrets, and the occasional monitor lizard swimming across the current. As the river narrows through the limestone gorge, the paddle picks up pace through a series of small rapids before opening into the wider lower channel.
The waterfall rappelling is located mid-route: a 15-metre cascade where the guide secures ropes to the cliff top and guests descend face-first through the falling water, controlling their own speed. The combination of physical sensation and adrenaline — and the extraordinary context of a jungle waterfall in a place where you are almost certainly the only tourists within 50 km — makes this one of the more memorable adventure tourism moments available in the Visayas.
The kawa hot bath is the essential recovery. The giant iron wok is positioned at the water's edge, heated over a wood fire, and filled with herb-infused water. Soaking in the kawa while looking upstream through the bamboo forest as evening approaches is the Antique equivalent of a spa treatment — deeply effective and completely original.
