About this tour

Bud Bongao rises to 314 meters directly behind the town of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi's capital, its forested slopes visible from every street in the city. The peak is one of the most unusual trekking destinations in the Philippines not because of its height but because of its inhabitants: dozens of wild long-tailed macaques who have lived on the mountain for centuries and regard human visitors with complete indifference โ€” accustomed to the stream of pilgrims and trekkers who have ascended this path for generations.

The macaques are the first surprise of the trek. By the time you are 15 minutes up the trail they are scrambling around your feet, sitting on the trail signs, and watching you with their amber eyes from branches at arm's reach. The guide carries bananas โ€” the traditional offering โ€” and feeding them is encouraged both as a cultural custom and as the most reliable way to trigger the full troop to emerge from the undergrowth. Watching a family of 20 macaques descend a fig tree for banana portions is one of the most charming wildlife encounters in Mindanao.

Beyond the macaques, the trail passes through genuine tropical rainforest with hornbills, Philippine pygmy squirrels, and several endemic bird species that ornithologists travel from abroad to see. The summit shrine โ€” a simple stone structure where Muslim pilgrims leave prayers and offerings โ€” is surrounded by ancient trees that filter the sunlight into green cathedral columns. The view from the top spans Bongao's harbor, the Sulu Sea stretching to Borneo, and a scattering of islands that on clear days includes the silhouette of the Malaysian state of Sabah on the southern horizon. It is a view that resets your sense of where the Philippines is in the world.
