Sorsogon Paguriran Island — Lake in the Sea
About this tour
Paguriran Island in Sorsogon is the Philippines' most perfectly formed tidal lagoon — a near-complete circle of white sandbar surrounding a sheltered lagoon of still, transparent water. At low tide, the sandbar emerges as a complete ring, encircling a turquoise inner lake that is sheltered from the waves and warmer than the surrounding sea. The geological formation resembles an atoll, except it sits in the middle of Sorsogon Bay rather than the open ocean.
The 6-hour tour from Sorsogon City crosses the bay by banca to reach Paguriran, arriving as the tide reveals the sandbar. You walk the full sandbar circle — approximately 800 metres — before swimming in the lagoon interior, where the water reaches only 1-3 metres depth and visibility is extraordinary. The contrast between the white sand, the luminous turquoise lagoon, and the green forested hill of Paguriran Island itself creates one of Sorsogon's most photogenic landscapes.
The outer reef edge of the sandbar has a coral drop-off excellent for snorkelling, with clownfish, parrotfish, and small reef sharks visible in the shallows. Lunch is prepared fresh on the island with locally sourced seafood. Paguriran receives very few visitors compared to Donsol — if you arrive early, you may have the lagoon entirely to yourself.
