Siargao Surf Photography & Cloud 9 Sunrise
About this tour
Cloud 9 is the Philippines' most famous wave — a hollow right-hand reef break that barrels consistently during swell season (August-December) and produces some of the most dramatic tube-riding photography in Asia. This 6-hour session is designed for photographers who want to document the surf culture of Siargao, not just watch it from the shore.
The experience begins at 5:00 AM for the pre-dawn paddle out to a photography position 20 metres behind the line-up — the optimal distance to capture the wave face and riders without being in the impact zone. The guide provides a waterproof housing for your mirrorless camera (Sony A7 series compatible, Canon R series compatible) or your own underwater housing is welcome. The sunrise burst of light through the barrel — water droplets catching the low sun against the dark reef below — is the defining image of Siargao surf photography. The session stays in the water until 8:30 AM as the swell builds with the morning wind.
At 9:00 AM the session moves to the iconic Cloud 9 boardwalk and tower for elevated surfing photography with a telephoto lens — the position every surf photographer wants. The afternoon moves to island hopping with photography stops at Naked Island (minimalist white sand and shallow turquoise water) and the habal-habal road across Siargao's central spine, where wide-angle landscape photography captures the island's extraordinary coconut-palm and rice-paddy interior.

About the area
Cloud 9 is located near General Luna on the eastern coast of Siargao. The reef break was first surfed by visiting Australians in the late 1980s and hosted the first Siargao International Surfing Cup in 1999. It is classified as one of Asia's top 10 surf breaks and hosts international professional competitions during the October-November peak swell season.
