About this tour

Magpupungko is a geological wonder that only reveals itself at low tide. As the ocean retreats, a series of enormous natural rock bowls are exposed along the rugged northern coastline of Siargao, filled with crystal-clear water warmed by the sun — forming natural infinity pools perched right at the ocean's edge. A short cliff jump (3–4 metres) drops you from the rocks directly into the swirling sea. It is the kind of place that stops people in their tracks.

The second half of the day transitions to Sohoton Cove National Park — a protected marine sanctuary accessible only by small native bancas. Inside the cove, guides lead you through a low limestone tunnel (sometimes swimming through, sometimes stooping) into a hidden lagoon where thousands of non-stinging jellyfish drift around you like living confetti. The surrounding cliffs are pocked with cathedral-sized sea caves draped in stalactites, and the water is so clear you can see the coral 10 metres down.

The combined tour covers roughly 120 km of road transfer across Siargao's lush interior plus boat rides in both locations. It is a long day — depart by 7 AM, return by 5–6 PM — but arguably the most memorable possible way to spend a single day on the island. Bring extra snacks, a waterproof phone case, and leave the fancy outfit at the resort.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Magpupungko?
The rock pools are only accessible at low tide — typically late morning (9 AM–12 PM) or late afternoon, depending on the tide calendar. Your guide will time the visit correctly.
Is swimming with jellyfish safe?
Yes. The jellyfish in Sohoton Cove are a species that has lost its sting through evolution — contact with them causes no irritation whatsoever. It is a surreal, magical experience.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness is sufficient. There is some walking on uneven terrain at Magpupungko and a brief swim-through tunnel at Sohoton (avoidable for non-swimmers via an alternate route).
