Pagsanjan Falls Kayak Tour
About this tour
Pagsanjan Falls has been a Philippine bucket-list attraction since the 19th century, when the gorge's dramatic bamboo-canopied canyon and 100-foot waterfall made it one of the first natural tourism sites in Luzon. Francis Ford Coppola filmed scenes for Apocalypse Now (1979) here โ the jungle-enclosed river was a perfect stand-in for the Nung River of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and the production spent months on the Pagsanjan river system.
The tour is entirely human-powered. Two experienced "banceros" (traditional paddlers) position you in a shallow dugout canoe and pole and paddle upstream against the Pagsanjan River's gentle current, threading through the 14 km gorge. The canyon walls rise to 100 metres on either side, draped in wild bamboo, hanging vines, and flowering epiphytes. Passing through 14 minor rapids and under a series of natural rock arches, you arrive at the base of the main falls โ a 25-metre cascade thundering into a deep emerald pool. For an additional fee, a bamboo raft takes you directly under the falls to stand in the spray inside a hidden cave behind the curtain of water.
The return trip is the highlight for adrenaline-seekers: the banceros navigate the same rapids downstream at speed, the canoe surfing through white water that soaks passengers to the skin. The gorge trail and river have been maintained by the Pagsanjan community for generations, and the bancero guides represent some of the most skilled river boatmen in Asia. The experience is genuinely wild โ not a theme park โ and deeply memorable.
