Mt Apo Base Camp Trekking — Cotabato & Davao Side
About this tour
Mount Apo at 2,954 metres above sea level is the highest mountain in the Philippines — a stratovolcano of extraordinary ecological complexity that rises from the lowland forests of Mindanao to a summit zone of open grassland and volcanic rock above the clouds. Climbing it is one of the great trekking challenges in Southeast Asia: not the most technically demanding mountain in the region, but long, varied, physically demanding, and rewarding in a way that stays with climbers for years.
The Kidapawan trail on the Cotabato-North Cotabato side is the most frequently climbed route, beginning at a trailhead at 900 metres and ascending through four distinct vegetation zones over two days: lowland forest giving way to mossy cloud forest, then to open dwarf bamboo grassland, and finally to the volcanic summit cone where the wind is cold and the sulfur vents hiss through cracks in the rock. Camp 3 at 2,200 metres is set in a forest of stunted trees hung with moss and orchids — waking there in the dark before the summit push, with the cloud below and the stars above, is one of the defining moments of Philippine outdoor adventure.
Lake Venado at 2,600 metres — a glacial crater lake surrounded by cloud forest that feels like something from Tolkien's mythology — is reached on Day 2 and is often cited by Mt Apo veterans as the single most beautiful spot on any Philippine mountain. The lake surface, when calm at dawn, reflects the summit cone and the surrounding forest with perfect fidelity. Philippine eagles patrol the airspace above. From Lake Venado to the summit is 3-4 hours of hard scrambling over volcanic rock and through the crater rim — arriving at the summit with the entirety of Mindanao spread below on a clear morning is one of the most moving physical accomplishments available in the Philippines.
