About this tour

The Monasterio de Tarlac sits in the mountains above San Jose, Tarlac, at an elevation that places it above the heat of the lowland plains and gives it panoramic views over the agricultural heartland of Central Luzon. Founded by Benedictine monks, the monastery is best known for housing one of the most venerated religious relics in the Philippines: a fragment of the True Cross, the wooden cross on which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, authenticated and donated by a private family to the monastery where it is enshrined and available for public veneration.

For Filipino Catholics, a pilgrimage to the Monasterio de Tarlac occupies a similar spiritual significance to a visit to Quiapo Church or the Penafrancia Basilica in Naga — it is a place where the ordinary logic of tourist travel gives way to something more personal. The monastery is visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, yet manages to maintain an atmosphere of genuine peace and contemplation. The Benedictine monks run a hermitage, a retreat house, and a small garden where guests may sit in silence.

The Stations of the Cross trail winds through the mountain forest above the monastery complex, with 14 carved stations at intervals along a path that takes roughly an hour to walk devotionally or 30 minutes at a normal pace. The forest provides shade and birdsong throughout, and the views from the upper stations over the Tarlac plain — Mount Arayat visible to the south, the Sierra Madre mountains to the east — are genuinely beautiful regardless of one's religious orientation. The monastery gift shop sells honey produced by the monks and religious items made in the monastery's workshop.
