Masbate Rodeo Festival Experience — Philippines' Only Cattle Rodeo
About this tour
In the Philippines, where most agriculture revolves around rice, fish, and coconuts, Masbate is an anomaly: a cattle island. The province has over 200,000 heads of cattle — more than any other province in the country — and a cowboy culture that traces its roots to the American colonial period when ranching was introduced as a model of modern agricultural productivity. Every April or May, this culture culminates in the Masbate Rodeo Festival — the only event of its kind in the Philippines and one of the most unusual festivals in Southeast Asia.
The festival runs for several days and the rodeo competition is its centrepiece: Filipino cowboys from ranches across Masbate, Bicol, and even Visayas compete in bull-riding (staying on an agitated 600-kg bull for 8 seconds), calf-roping (lasso a calf and tie its legs in the fastest time), cattle-cutting (separate a single cow from the herd using only horse and body position), and the crowd-favourite steer decorating event, where teams race to tie ribbons on a live steer in the shortest time. The skill levels range from genuinely jaw-dropping to spectacularly unsuccessful, and the crowd reaction is enthusiastic either way.
The cultural package gives you grandstand seating for the main rodeo events, access to the agricultural fair running alongside (livestock competitions, farm equipment displays, local produce market), and a guided visit to one of the ranches on the outskirts of Masbate City where the cowboys prepare their horses and equipment in the early morning. A local guide explains the social history of Masbate ranching and its economic relationship to the rest of the province. Book via Klook for confirmed event access and local guide.
