About this tour

Marinduque is one of the most genuinely off-the-beaten-path provinces in Luzon — a heart-shaped island (literally: viewed from above it resembles the classic Valentine heart) that has preserved its Spanish colonial heritage and natural environment far better than more visited destinations. This full-day tour combines the island's two most compelling experiences: the heritage streets of Boac and the uninhabited Tres Reyes Islands.

Boac, the provincial capital, is centred on one of the most dramatically sited Spanish colonial churches in the Philippines. The Boac Cathedral (formally St. Joseph's Parish Church) was built in 1684 on a craggy hilltop rising 40 metres above the Boac River, its walls thickened over the centuries to serve as a fortress-refuge during Moro raids. The surrounding old town is a well-preserved colonial quarter of ancestral houses with azotea balconies, capiz-shell windows, and tiled courtyards — one of the most authentic glimpses of 19th-century Philippine provincial life surviving intact. A walking heritage tour with a local historian guide covers the church, the riverside promenade, and three ancestral houses whose families agree to host visitors.

After lunch at a Boac riverside restaurant, the afternoon shifts to the sea. The Tres Reyes Islands (Three Kings Islands) — Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar — are three small uninhabited limestone islands rising from the shallow Sibuyan Sea south of Marinduque. Their reefs are essentially untouched; the area sees few tourist boats even in peak season. Snorkelling reveals coral gardens, sea fans, and abundant fish life in visibility that regularly exceeds 20 metres. The islands are named after the Three Magi who visited the infant Jesus — their feast day on January 6 draws a small pilgrimage from Boac families each year.
