Del Monte Pineapple Plantation Tour — Bukidnon Highlands

Del Monte Philippines has been growing pineapples in the highlands of Bukidnon since 1926 — nearly a century of agricultural history on one of the world's largest plantation operations. The fields stretch across the cool plateau country of northern Mindanao at 600-1,200 metres elevation, where the climate produces pineapples of exceptional sweetness and quality that have made the Del Monte brand synonymous with Philippine tropical fruit worldwide. Visiting the plantation is a window into both industrial-scale agriculture and the natural bounty of the Bukidnon highlands.

The guided walk through the pineapple rows is more interesting than it sounds. The agronomist guide explains the 18-month growth cycle of the pineapple, the controlled application of ethylene to synchronize ripening across different field sections, the mechanical harvest processes, and the quality sorting system that grades each fruit for fresh export versus canning. You learn that a pineapple plant produces exactly one fruit per year, that the crown can be replanted for the next cycle, and that each of the 25,000 hectares is on a carefully managed rotation system designed to maintain soil health across generations of cultivation.

The fresh tasting at the end of the tour is the obvious highlight: Del Monte's flagship MD-2 variety, cut open with a machete right in the field, eaten standing in the highland air with the juice running down your chin.
