About this tour

Biliran Island, nestled between Leyte and Samar in the heart of the Eastern Visayas, is one of the Philippines' most rewarding off-the-beaten-path destinations — and its waterfalls are the headline act. The island's volcanic geology, fed by the same tectonic forces that built Mount Biliran's twin peaks, produces waterfalls of extraordinary force and beauty, many of them falling from heights above 30 metres into cold, clear pools surrounded by primary rainforest. The Biliran Waterfalls Circuit visits three in a single day, each with a distinct character that makes the combination more than the sum of its parts.

The day begins at Recoletos Falls in Naval municipality — a powerful two-tiered cascade surrounded by dense secondary growth that creates a natural amphitheatre of sound and mist. The pool beneath is deep enough for swimming and cold enough to revive even the most heat-exhausted traveller. From here, the circuit moves inland to Ulan-Ulan Falls — the showpiece of the three, named "rain-rain" by locals for the constant mist that fills the surrounding forest and catches sunlight like scattered diamonds. The pool here is circular, emerald-green, and has an otherworldly quality amplified by the silence of the surrounding old-growth trees.

The final waterfall — Tomalistis in Caibiran — is the most dramatic in terms of setting: a narrow plunge fall dropping 35 metres into a gorge accessible via a short but steep trail through farmland and forest. The gorge walls are covered in ferns, orchids, and mosses, and the fall's mist feeds an ecosystem of extraordinary density. Together, these three falls represent some of the most rewarding waterfall chasing in all of Eastern Visayas.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult are the waterfall trails?
Recoletos and Ulan-Ulan are easy to moderate walks of 10-20 minutes each. Tomalistis involves a 30-minute trail with one steep section — moderate fitness required.
How do I get to Biliran Island?
Biliran is connected to Leyte by a road bridge. From Tacloban, it is approximately 2.5 hours to Naval by private van or bus.
Is swimming possible at all three waterfalls?
Yes — all three have swimmable pools. Bring a change of clothes as the Ulan-Ulan and Tomalistis mist will soak you even without swimming.
