Apo Reef Day Trip Snorkeling & Diving from Sablayan
About this tour
Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro is the closest mainland access point to Apo Reef Natural Park, just 32 km off the coast in the Sulu Sea. While Puerto Galera liveaboards reach Apo Reef via an overnight crossing, Sablayan visitors can access the reef on a day trip β a 1.5 to 2-hour bangka ride each way, leaving time for two dives or extended snorkelling on the atoll's most accessible sites.
The boat heads to the North Atoll's lagoon side first, where the reef top sits at just 3β8 metres β ideal for snorkellers who can see the same coral gardens that divers access on their first dive. The fish density is extraordinary even in the shallows: clouds of anthias, hunting trevally, parrotfish grazing on coral heads, and (with luck) reef sharks cruising the sandy channels between coral formations. For certified divers, the outer wall drops dramatically into the deep blue Sulu Sea, and the shark action β grey reef sharks, whitetips, and seasonal thresher sightings β begins at 18β25 metres.
Apo Reef Lighthouse Island offers a surface interval highlight: a small sandy beach with an 1890s Spanish colonial lighthouse where hawksbill turtles rest undisturbed in the shade of the lighthouse compound. After the surface interval, a second dive on the South Atoll covers pristine table coral formations and cleaning stations frequented by large Napoleon wrasse. Sablayan is off the main tourist circuit, which means Apo Reef from this side is dramatically less crowded than liveaboard approaches β often just your boat and the reef.
