About this tour

Antique is the western province of Panay Island — a long strip of coast backed by the Antique Mountain Range, which forms part of one of Southeast Asia's significant biodiversity hotspots. The mountains receive heavy rainfall from the Sulu Sea and sustain old-growth forest systems that harbour endemic birds, plants, and freshwater ecosystems found nowhere else in the world. Most tourists pass through Antique on the way from Iloilo City to Caticlan for Boracay; those who stop discover a province of extraordinary natural beauty and virtually no tourist infrastructure.

Malumpati Cold Spring in Pandan municipality is fed by an underground freshwater source that maintains a constant temperature of 23-24 degrees Celsius regardless of ambient conditions — refreshingly cold in the tropical heat. The spring feeds a natural pool of such clarity that the sandy bottom 3 metres down appears to be 50 centimetres away. The surrounding bamboo grove and fruit trees are maintained as a community eco-park; the guide identifies endemic species of bamboo and explains the watershed's role in supplying fresh water to coastal communities.

The drive south to Sebaste municipality leads to the start of the Igpasungaw Falls trek. The trail follows a forest river upstream through secondary and primary growth, crossing the water multiple times on stepping stones and a bamboo bridge, before arriving at the falls system: a series of three cascades dropping through mossy rock formations into deep blue pools. The upper tier is the most dramatic — a 20-metre curtain of white water splitting around a central rock formation that creates a natural shower point for swimmers brave enough to stand under it. The guide explains the forest ecology and points out endemic Panay species along the trail; the bird diversity alone justifies the journey for nature travellers.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the trek to Igpasungaw Falls?
The trek to Igpasungaw requires 1-1.5 hours each way on a forest trail with some steep sections and river crossings. Moderate fitness and closed-toe shoes are required. The Malumpati Cold Spring section is flat and easily accessible.
Why is Antique so undeveloped for tourism?
Antique province lies on the western (Sulu Sea) side of Panay Island — less accessible than Iloilo and less marketed than Boracay. Its comparative isolation has preserved extraordinary natural environments that have yet to be discovered by most international visitors. This makes it one of the most rewarding off-track destinations in the Visayas.
