Siquijor Island Day Trip: Mystical Beaches, Waterfalls and Folk Healers

The Philippines has a thousand islands, but only one has a reputation for magic. Siquijor, pronounced see-kee-HOR, is the island Filipinos tell stories about in the dark, the one associated with folk healers, love potions, and things that do not quite have rational explanations. It is also, in the full light of day, one of the most spectacularly beautiful islands in the Visayas: white beaches, cascading waterfalls, crystal coves, and a pace of life so unhurried it borders on timeless.

Getting to Siquijor from Dumaguete

Ferries and fast crafts from Dumaguete port reach Siquijor town in about 1 to 1.5 hours. Ticket prices run PHP 120 to 250 depending on vessel type. Our Siquijor day trip from Dumaguete includes ferry tickets and a guided island tour that covers all the highlights in one organized day.

Cambugahay Falls

Cambugahay Falls cascades in three tiers through a forest of banyan trees, filling natural pools in a vivid blue-green. Tarzan swings hang from the trees, thick rope swings that launch you over the upper pool. Entrance is free. Visit in the morning before the day-tripping crowds arrive. Bring water shoes as the rocks are slippery.

Salagdoong Beach

On the eastern coast of Siquijor, Salagdoong Beach is a forested national park beach with two connected coves and clear, calm water. There is a diving platform at around 6 meters and a higher launch point at around 10 meters. Entrance to the national park area is PHP 30.

Lazi Church, the Ancient Balete Tree, and Folk Healers

The San Isidro Labrador Parish Church in Lazi, built in 1884, is one of the most impressive churches in the Philippines. Its adjacent convent, the largest in Asia it is claimed, sits beside it in a state of magnificent decay. Nearby, the oldest balete tree in the Philippines stands in Lazi, a massive ancient tree whose aerial roots have grown into a cathedral of their own, with a small freshwater pool at its base. The folk healing tradition, locally called mananambal, is real and active on Siquijor. Treat this as a genuine cultural tradition rather than a tourist attraction.

Getting Around and Should You Stay or Day-Trip?

Rent a motorcycle near the ferry terminal for PHP 350 to 500 per day, or hire a tricycle for a half-day circuit at PHP 600 to 800. The island can be circumnavigated by road in 2 to 3 hours. A day trip from Dumaguete is feasible and covers the main highlights. But Siquijor rewards staying; watching the sunset over the Visayan Sea from the west coast, alone or near-alone on the beach, is a genuinely special experience. Budget guesthouses in San Juan start at PHP 800 to 1,200 per night.
